Who's Minding the Kitchen?
There really is nothing better than following your passion!
10 years ago, architect Gerty Leong decided to draw a new set of blue prints for her future and follow her lifelong passion for food. Her dream was to create a kitchen ripe for creative culinary minds, and capture the elusive transcending characteristics of cooking and entertaining. Four years after opening a successful deli in Chicago’s Bucktown neighborhood, Gerty decided to close the deli doors and focus exclusively on catering. She found that catering was a place where she could express her appreciation for all things, creative, designed and delicious.
Erin Battison, the Director of Sales and Marketing, came to the table with her own passion for all things culinary. Hours spent in the kitchen watching her mother and grandmother create family traditions fresh from their own gardens, led her to love good food and respect for what comes from nature. Erin’s professional background includes years spent working in the NFP sector on agriculture, organic, and water issues. She refined her “taste” for combining food, entertaining and nature when she developed the Special Events Department at one of Chicago’s premier Museums. Her passion and experience has guided Sun + Moon to grow with a purposeful mission. Erin’s in her element when working with sustainable, healthy, irresistible food.
Sun + Moon maintains a food philosophy that honors its Midwestern roots. Working with fresh, local ingredients and building strong relationships with vendors and nearby farmers is a central goal for the company. Sun + Moon prepares cuisine that is fresh, seasonal and presented so the tasteful simplicity of the ingredients shine.
A Green Business – Long Before Green Became So Popular in the Press
Sun + Moon practices are not something recent or trendy–the business has operated with this fundamental philosophy for years. Examples of ways we aim to consider & conserve:
- In 2006, when building a new expanded 3000 sq. ft. kitchen, renewable/green materials were used wherever possible. The office and prep areas have bamboo floors!
- Energy efficient lights are not turned on in the office unless absolutely necessary.
- Computer paper is recycled. Other than invoices, the office prints on both sides of a sheet to re-use rather than throw out.
- Plastic, aluminum, glass are all recycled. Green packaging is used whenever possible.
- Water is used judiciously. If it’s running, it’s for a reason.
- And of course, planning menus based on the Midwest seasons best.
Through the years, we’ve grown because of the relationships with our clients. Our prosperity in no small part is due to the fact that almost 99% of our business is referral and repeat. We thank those of you that have allowed us to follow our passion; and for those of you that are new to Sun + Moon, we truly look forward to offering you unpretentious and healthy food with style.
